The writer told Collider that some story threads from the first batch of episodes would lead directly into a second run.
"There are loads...of hooks and cliffhangers and potential new stories," he claimed. "The thing about a show like this is that we have to keep the threats and the jeopardy coming, especially with this sci-fi genre. It’s a very realistic sci-fi show, so you can’t just have a bunch of aliens pitching up on another planet and trying to imprison them all."
Richards explained that the second series would likely deal with the mystery surrounding the human survivors on Earth.
"The mystery of Earth is a really big deal, or [at least] we try to make it so," he confirmed. "We’ve got to keep thinking of new challenges for [the characters], and I think we’re going to be able to do that through what's happened on Earth."
Outcasts is expected to air on BBC One later this year.
