Kierston Wareing and Ashley Walters have signed up to appear in Channel 4's new drama Top Boy.

The thriller focuses on the personal stories of a group of gang members in Hackney.

Walters, who recently starred in Outcasts, will play the gang's leader Dushane. Dushane ends up being noticed by a former convict called Bobby, played by Five Daughters actor Geoff Bell. Meanwhile, musician Kane Robinson will star as Dushane's friend Sully.

Dushane and Sully try to take over the supply of drugs in their estate but their mission has a big impact on the local residents. Wareing, who recently appeared in Five Daughters, will play a struggling pregnant woman called Heather who is determined to give her baby a good life.

Top Boy's writer Ronan Bennett, who spoke to local young people before penning the script, explained that he wants the series to "look at the fabric of life in a world we hear a lot about, but about which we know a lot less than we think".

Channel 4's head of drama Camilla Campbell said: "Ronan's script is not only honest and contemporary, due to the vast research with the kids and their extraordinary stories, it is also gripping, funny and entertaining. It will be a striking piece of drama that is perfect for Channel 4."

Filming for Top Boy began in London this month and the show will air later this year on Channel 4.
