The popularity of ITV1 comedy Benidorm has reportedly caused a surge in holidaymakers booking breaks to the Spanish resort.

The show, which recently returned for its fourth series with record ratings of 7.31m, apparently leads to a 159% rise in interest on when it airs at 9pm on Fridays.

Spokesman Bob Atkinson said: "People love to be inspired by films, TV and celebrities for their holidays and it's great to see such a surge of interest in Benidorm.

"It is enjoying a bit of a renaissance and represents great value at the moment."

However, Sebastian Fernandez of Benidorm council said that the show depicts "negative images of people drinking too much, taking drugs and having sex in public".

The current series has featured cameos from the likes of Cilla Black and Loose Women star Denise Welch.
