Fox has announced details of a major new reality series being dubbed as a version of American Idol for filmmakers.
The new show, On The Lot, is being produced by Survivor guru Mark Burnett and movie legend Steven Spielberg for the network's upcoming Fall schedule.
The format will be similar to that of Idol, beginning with an initial auditions process that will eventually whittle down contestants to a final sixteen. Those sixteen will then be placed into "teams", headed up by a different group member each week during the live rounds.
Each week the teams will have to make a short film from that week's genre - ranging from thriller to romance, sci-fi or horror - and present it during the Film Premiere episode.
Like Idol, a panel of judges will critique the pieces but America will decide wo stays and who goes through interactive voting. The decision will be presented in a second weekly episode, the Box Office results show, when one of the team leaders is eliminated.
"Movie-making is completely relatable to the American public," said Mark Darnell, head of reality at Fox. "Everyone enjoys going to the movies, reading about the movies and learning about the movies. Most Americans consider themselves amateur film critics and this will give viewers the opportunity to create the next big filmmaker."
