ITV is planning an adaptation of Lindy Woodhead's period novel Shopping, Seduction & Mr Selfridge.

Andrew Davies is currently working on the script for ITV1 and the drama is in the early development stages, reports Broadcast.

The original book follows the story of American retailer Harry Gordon Selfridge, who launched the famous Oxford Street department store in London in 1909.

Davies's previous credits include the BBC's Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.

A rep for ITV confirmed: "We're in discussions with ITV Studios about the possibility of developing an adaptation of Shopping, Seduction & Mr Selfridge."

ITV is believed to be interested in investing more money in period dramas following the overwhelming success of Downton Abbey last year.
