The channel asked for an episode of comedy drama Eggbox, which focuses on life in a teenage cancer ward.
The series has been written by Tom Bidwell, who had cancer when he was 15. Bidwell previously worked on Wish 143, an Oscar-nominated short film about a teenager with the illness.
Meanwhile, BBC Three has also ordered a pilot of IED, which focuses on a British bomb disposal unit.
The sitcom, from Miranda writers James Cary and Richard Hurst, is expected to focus on life in the army and why soldiers enjoy their job.
BBC Three controller Zai Bennett also announced today that the channel will broadcast a new series from Sharon Horgan and Holly Walsh. The US comedy Wilfred will be aired later this year.
