'Planet of the Apemen' grabs 2.3m on BBC One

BBC One's Planet of the Apemen: Battle for Earth launched with almost 2.3m on Thursday evening, according to the latest audience data.

The two-part mini-series, telling the story of how homo sapiens once shared the planet with other species of hominid, averaged 2.27m (10.1%) for BBC One in the 8pm hour.

Traffic Cops drove away with 4.21m (19.1%) on BBC One in the 9pm hour, outperforming The Choir That Rocks, which had 2.3m (10.5%) on ITV1 and 104k (0.6%) on +1.

Piers Morgan's Life Stories was seen by 1.24m (9.8%) on ITV1 from 10.30pm and Question Time quizzed 2.55m (19.7%) on BBC One from 10.45pm.

On BBC Two, coverage of Wimbledon 2011 appealed to 2.21m (11.1%) between 5.45pm and 9.30pm, while 130k (0.7%) watched on the BBC HD channel up to 8pm. A comedy panel show double of QI and Mock The Week amused 1.51m (6.8%) and 2.64m (13.2%) from 9.30pm.

Highlights programme Today at Wimbledon served up 213k (1%) on BBC HD in the 8pm hour and History Cold Case investigated 119k (0.5%) from 9pm.

Help! My House Is Falling Down entertained 1.39m (6.2%) on Channel 4 in the 8pm hour and 277k (1.3%) on +1. Documentary series Born To Be Different captivated 1.53m (6.9%) from 9pm and 220k (1.2%) an hour later. The Sex Researchers deduced 1.11m (6.2%) in the 10pm hour and 142k (1.4%) on timeshift.

Over at Channel 5, World's Most Extreme Airports attracted 1.05m (4.8%) between 7.30pm and 9pm, before new series Walking the Amazon pulled in 1.2m (5.5%). A screening of Time Cop entertained 750k (5.1%) from 10pm.

Overall, BBC One narrowly won primetime with 19% against ITV1's 18.9% (+1: 0.4%). BBC Two ranked in third with 10.8%, ahead of Channel 4's 5.6% (+1: 0.9%) and Channel 5's 4.4%.

Elsewhere, Peter Andre: The Next Chapter entertained 773k (3.5%) on ITV2 in the 9pm hour and 218k (1.2%) on ITV2+1.

Kids Behind Bars averaged 960k (4.4%) for BBC Three in the 9pm hour, and Johnny Vegas's sitcom Ideal continued with 511k (3.2%) from 10.30pm.
