'Dr Zhivago' in Russian screen adaptation

The very first Russian screen adaptation of Dr Zhivago has finished production.

The book, which tells the story of war and revolution in Russia, focuses on the love of Lara Guishar and Dr Yury Zuivago. It was banned during the reign of the Soviet Union.

Director Alexander Proshkin says he had to throw away the book after he had first read it, as he was scared of being caught and interrogated.

He added: "The characters fall into a terrifying threshing machine of time, into a historical cataclysm. We are at the beginning of the 21st century. We too have fallen into a time of change. I can't say it's important because it's not a screen adaptation. It's a contemporary TV series in which certain separate, episodes of the novel have been crudely used."
