Dominic West has admitted that he has suffered from nightmares since working on a new drama about Fred West.

Appropriate Adult, which is due to air on ITV later this year, focuses on the period between Fred West's arrest and his suicide.

West, who previously described his research for the show as "disturbing", has now confessed that the project has had a big impact on him.

"I have this recurring dream where I'm perched on a wall and Fred West is trying to grab me and pull me down," he told the Radio Times. "But I didn't let him get to me. I was determined not to."

However, West explained that he is pleased with the way the story is told and added that it is important not to forget the case.

"The production team have found a way of telling this story through the eyes of a social worker who was sent to interview West in prison," he said. "I think it's effective without being sensational in any way.

"Thousands of people still go missing in this country every year and are never found. Fred West preyed on runaways without being caught for 25 years. We should not forget this case, because there could be others like him."

West's co-star Emily Watson has previously insisted that the drama is "handled very sensitively", but Fred West's daughter Anne Marie Davis has criticised the project.

West will next be seen in BBC Two's drama The Hour, which begins on Tuesday at 9pm.
