'Blue Peter' renamed for environment day
Published Wednesday, May 24 2006, 00:16 BST | By Dave West
Blue Peter has announced it is changing its name for an episode about the environment.
The historical move will see it billed – for one night only – as Green Peter. The alteration, on Wednesday 24 May, will be the first of its kind in the show's 47-year history.
Editor Richard Marson said the environment is an issue close to his audience's heart. "We know from the thousands of emails we get from Blue Peter viewers that they are passionate and active about green issues," he explained. "Many are understandably scared about the future of their planet and how this will affect them.
"Green Peter won't be a list of scare stories, the purpose will be to focus on what is being done, what can be done, what needs to be done to protect the world the Blue Peter audience will inherit."
The episode - part of the BBC's Climate Chaos season – will be broadcast from the Green Peter garden. A website will be setup on bbc.co.uk/cbbc so viewers can calculate their contribution to fighting climate change.
