'Law & Order' to be remade for Russia

Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: SVU will both be remade for the Russian audience under a new format deal between NBC and Russian broadcaster NTV.

The move marks the first time ever that a primetime US series has been remade for the local Russian audience.

Both series - currently in pre-production in Moscow for premiere later this year - will initially adapt the original US scripts, taking into account language, culture and the local justice system.

"Whatever differences may exist between Russia and the USA, there is one area where we are united - in our strong intent to fight crime," said Eugeni Kucherenko, head of programming at NTV.

"TV is a very influential medium and this is why we strive to show that evil must not prevail and that law and order will always be on top in the fight. We don't have any doubts that our new series, based on the Law and Order branded formats, will not only entertain, but will serve this noble public cause."

The agreement is the second international format deal for the Law & Order franchise: a local version of Law & Order: Criminal Intent is currently in pre-production for TF1 in France.
