Sky1 controller Stuart Murphy confirmed at the Edinburgh TV Festival that he had been for dinner with the Office comic and discussed future shows that they could team up on.
"He was on about a particular comedian, he said he'd always wanted to do something with him, he had this particular idea and described this character who was unacceptable and un-PC," said Murphy.
"I was like perfect - let's go straight to series. Let's do it."
Murphy added: "On my side. He's pushing against a open door... I owe it to my team and the viewers who pay £20-a-month for Sky. I'd hope the person in charge of Sky would have the balls to commission Ricky Gervais on a one-on-one pitch."
Gervais's second series of An Idiot Abroad with Karl Pilkington will air on Sky1 in September.
