Simon Cowell's Red or Black? averaged 4.47m (21.3%) for ITV1 between 6.45pm and 8pm, down nearly 2m viewers on its debut episode in the previous evening. An additional 140k (0.6%) watched the show on timeshift.
Red or Black? returned from 8.30pm with 5.55m (21.1%) and 169k (0.6%) on +1, as carer Kevin Cartwright became the second £1m winner after correctly choosing red in the final wheel spin.
After the show, Dominic West's hypnotic portrait of serial killer Fred West in new drama mini-series Appropriate Adult opened with 4.53m (18.1%) and 381k (2.3%) on +1.
Nature's Miracle Babies appealed to 3.81m (19.4%) on BBC One from 6.30pm, before Countryfile commanded 5.62m (23.3%) from 7.30pm. Inspector George Gently investigated a healthy 6.47m (24.8%) for BBC One between 8.30pm and 10pm.
A repeat of Harry's Arctic Heroes fetched 900k (4.4%) from 6.30pm, before Dragons' Den did the business with 2.8m (10.8%) from 8pm and 180k (0.7%) on BBC HD. World's Most Dangerous Roads was enjoyed by 2.17m (8.3%) in the 9pm slot and 144 (0.5%) in HD, and Grumpy Guide To... nabbed 1.97m (10.3%).
World athletics coverage ran away with 990k (4.6%) on Channel 4 in the 7pm hour and Back From the Dead educated 1.19m (4.6%) from 8pm, along with 209k (0.8%) on +1. The terrestrial premiere of Chris Morris's Four Lions engaged 1.83m (8.1%) from 9pm and 415k (3%) on +1.
A showing of Spider-Man 2 pulled in 1.47m (6.5%) between 6.30pm and 9pm, before Celebrity Big Brother stayed strong with 2.5m (9.5%) in the 9pm slot. Celebrity Big Brother's Bit On The Side had 245k (1.3%) on 5* from 10pm.
Overall, BBC One edged primetime with 22.2% against ITV1's 20.3% (+1: 1%) and BBC Two's 8.5%. Channel 5 came next with 7%, followed by Channel 4 with 6.3% (+1: 0.8%).
On the multi-channels, spinoff show Xtra Factor mustered 778k (4.5%) on ITV2 from 6.30pm and 226k (1.1%) on +1. Strike Back: Project Dawn continued with 496k (1.9%) on Sky1 in the 9pm hour.
