Channel 5 to screen Kerrang! Awards

By
Channel 5 is to screen the Kerrang! Awards 2001 - the first time the awards have been televised in their eight-year history.

Renowned as the baddest awards in the music awards calendar, the Kerrang! Awards will feature in an hour-long spectacular on Channel 5.

Also for the first time, the Kerrang! Awards will be broadcast on Kerrang! Radio - a special RSL in the Manchester area - broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week from August 7th up to and including the day of the awards on 87.7FM.

The Awards ceremony will take place in central London on Tuesday, August 28th and will be screened on Channel 5 on Sunday, September 2nd.

Presented by Phil Alexander, editor-in-chief of Kerrang! Magazine, past winners have included the likes of Stereophonics, Foo Fighters, Napalm Death, Motorhead and Marilyn Manson. Says Phil:

"The last 12 months have been a phenomenal time for rock music in the UK and around the world, and the Kerrang! Awards 2001 will reflect that. The awards themselves have become a fantastic excuse for the ultimate rock'n'roll party and I'm sure this year will be no exception. The only difference is that people at home will get to see the carnage for themselves thanks to Channel 5's coverage. It should be pretty special."

Adam Perry, Channel 5's Controller of Special Events, said: "Channel 5 is delighted to be joining forces with the world's biggest rock magazine. The Kerrang! Awards are the biggest date in the Rock calendar and not only will this be the first time it has been shown on British TV, 5 will also be dedicating an entire day's programmes to all things Rock."

Kerrang! Magazine readers will determine which nu-metal and rock badboys will be up for this year's accolades in categories including: Best British Band, Best British Live Act, Best International Live Act, Best Album, Best Band In The World, Best International Newcomer, Best Single and Best Video. The shortlist for the Best Video category is currently on Kerrang! TV.

The full shortlist of nominees will be announced on Wednesday, August 22nd, at the Kerrang! Day of Rock, kickstarting a series of special gigs across the Capital and Manchester, details of which will be announced soon.

Kerrang! Radio will also be available online via www.kerrang.com as well as on Virgin Megastore Radio and the Student Broadcast Network.
