The broadcaster announced last year that in 2012 it will screen a number of plays by the famous scribe, which will be produced by Sam Mendes.
Irons has now landed the lead role of Henry IV in the BBC Two adaptation, The Guardian reports.
He will be joined by Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale, who will star as Prince Hal and Falstaff respectively.
Hiddleston has also signed up for the lead role in another of the BBC's Shakespeare plays, Henry V.
The BBC's adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard II, which stars Ben Whishaw, Patrick Stewart and David Suchet, has already been filmed.
The Shakespeare season will air on BBC Two next year.
