New Midsomer Murders episode, 'The Night of the Stag', averaged 5.38m (23.2%) for ITV1 between 8pm and 10pm, along with 258k (1.2%) on +1.
The crime drama proved too strong for Planet Dinosaur's 2.86m (12.5%) on BBC One from 8.30pm, and the appearance of artist Tracy Emin on Who Do You Think You Are? , which was enjoyed by 3.54m (15%) from 9pm, the lowest rating so far in the current series. Ask Rhod Gilbert pulled in 1.64m (13.3%) from 10.45pm.
Series three of The Only Way Is Essex continued with 845k (4.5%) on ITV2 from 10pm, as well as a further 132k (1.3%) on timeshift.
BBC Three's The Fades, the six-part horror drama starring Iain De Caestecker and Lily Loveless, continued with 522k (2.2%) in the 9pm hour and 81k (0.3%) on BBC HD.
A History of Ancient Britain appealed to 1.65m (7.7%) on BBC Two in the 7pm hour, before All Roads Lead Home fetched 1.33m (5.9%) from 8pm. Dragons' Den had 1.09m (4.6%) from 9pm and Rab C Nesbitt amused 1.58m (8%) from 10pm.
Channel 4's Location, Location, Location located 2.67m (11.8%) in the 8pm hour and 244k (1%) on +1. Grand Designs interested 3.08m (13.1%) and on 345k (2%) on timeshift. Fresh Meat continued with 1.08m (5.9%) from 10pm and 125k (1.3%) an hour later.
Highland Emergency took 643k (2.9%) on Channel 5 from 7.30pm, before Ultimate Emergency fetched 932k (4.1%) in the 8pm slot. Soho Blues had 1m (4.2%) from 9pm.
Big Brother continued on Channel 5 with 1.33m (7.6%) in the 10pm hour, and Big Brother's Bit On The Side entertained 296k (3.2%) on 5* from 11pm.
Overall, ITV1 won primetime with 22.2% (+1: 0.8%) against BBC One's 16.8%. Channel 4 came in third with 8.7% (+1: 1%), followed by BBC Two with 6.3% and Channel 5's with 4.3%.
Elsewhere, Mount Pleasant amused 450k (1.9%) on Sky1 from 9pm and a screening of Apocalypto delighted 673k (5.3%) on BBC Three from 10pm.
