ITV has commissioned a new drama series that promises to be a "fresh and unique" take on the genre.
Each episode of Fallen Angel - currently in production - will begin in the present day before heading back in time to tell the story of the "making of a murderer".
"It is a very exciting idea with a totally original format," said Nick Elliott, ITV's director of drama. "I cannot remember many, if any, dramas that have told a story backwards over 25 years, uncovering truth and secrets as we go."
Heading up the cast are Emilia Fox (Silent Witness), as the beautiful murderer Rosemary, and Charles Dance (Bleak House), who previously appeared together in 1997's Rebecca.
Also starring are Clare Holman (Lewis), Sheila Hancock (Bleak House), Mark Benton (Northern Lights), Emma Fielding (Ghost Squad) and James D'Arcy (Poirot).
Filming of the 3x90' episodes began last week in London and the home counties. IWC Media is producing.
