Top Boy has been renewed for a second series by Channel 4.

The broadcaster announced today that the drama, written by Ronan Bennett, will return for four more episodes.

Top Boy, which starred Ashley Walters and Kierston Wareing alongside a lineup of new talent, focused on the life of gang members living in Hackney and received acclaim from critics.

Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt described the show as "hugely original and passionate, with a brilliant roster of new talent", while Channel 4's head of drama Camilla Campbell suggested that it has a "distinct authorial voice".

Campbell continued: "We were delighted that Top Boy resonated so widely and captured a world behind the headlines in a deeply humane and absorbing way, and look forward to inviting its loyal viewers back next year."

Top Boy picked up an average of 1.9m viewers when it aired earlier this month. The new series is expected to be on screens next year.
