Mrs Brown's Boys has been handed a third series by BBC One.

The second series of the comedy, which was ordered in March, has not even been broadcast yet.

Mrs Brown's Boys stars Brendan O'Carroll as matriarch Agnes Brown. O'Carroll's real wife, daughter, son and sister also appear in the show.

BBC One's controller Danny Cohen described Mrs Brown's Boys as a "joyful, laugh out loud comedy", while the controller of comedy commissioning Cheryl Taylor said she is "pleased as punch" about the news.

"What an extraordinary Christmas present," O'Carroll added. "The BBC must be mad. To allow us to dress up and play again is an extraordinary gift and we genuinely don't take it lightly.

"We're overwhelmed with the support of the audience and hopefully when they see what we've done with the second series they'll see that maybe the BBC is not totally mad."

Mrs Brown's Boys is due to return to BBC One in December with a Christmas special.
