The comedian is said to have "thrilled" controller Jay Hunt with his retirement home sitcom Derek, where he is joined by Karl Pilkington in his first acting role.
The claim follows the conclusion of Gervais's latest BBC show Life's Too Short on Tuesday (December 20), which according to The Mirror, has left bosses somewhat underwhelmed.
"There have been many meetings in a bid to discover why it missed the mark," an insider said. "No-one really knows. Some you win, some you lose."
Writing about Derek on his official blog last month, Gervais declared that he was "so excited" about the project and claimed: "[I] haven't felt this way [about a show] since The Office if I'm being honest."
Sir Sean Connery was last month rumoured to be making an appearance on Derek.
Gervais has also confirmed that he is considering a special edition of An Idiot Abroad for Christmas 2012 in which Pilkington cycles around the world with dwarf actor Warwick Davis of Life's Too Short.
