Sir David Jason's The Royal Bodyguard pulled in over 7 million viewers last night, according to the latest overnight data.

The BBC One sitcom premiered with 7.05m (28.4%) at 9.30pm, after which Mrs Brown's Boys amused 6.61m (28.1%) at 10pm.

Christopher Eccleston drama The Borrowers took 5.38m (22.2%) between 7.30pm and 9pm.

Over on ITV1, 3.22m (14.7%) watched The Unforgettable Ernie Wise at 7pm, while Agatha Christie's Poirot captivated 4.21m (17.6%) between 9pm and 11pm (+1: 287k/1.5%).

Channel 4's screening of Home Alone was seen by 1.57m (6.7%) from 7pm. (+1: 182k/0.7%), then the audience rose to 2.21m (8.7%) for Bear's Wild Weekend with Miranda (+1: 294k/1.3%).

A Springwatch review averaged 1.59m (7%) for BBC Two at 7pm. University Challenge was the channel's most-watched programme with 2.08m (8.1%) at 8.30pm.

Elsewhere, Britain's Favourite Christmas Song grabbed 838k (3.5%) for Channel 5 between 7pm and 10pm, before Dirty Dancing entertained 1.06m (5.8%).

Overall, BBC One topped primetime with 26.4%, beating ITV1's 20.7% (+1: 1%). Channel 4 claimed third place with 6.7% (+1: 0.8%), ahead of BBC Two's 5.9% and Channel 5's 3.7%.

BBC Three's Most Annoying People of 2011 countdown enthralled 776k (3.1%).
