The 90-minute special first aired on the Disney Channel in the US earlier this year, setting record ratings amongst its target audience - the so-called "tween" market of 10 to 15-year-olds.
Starring Zac Efron (Summerland) in the lead role, High School Musical follows the story of two mismatched students who come together to try out for the leads in the annual musical, throwing the school's cliques into chaos.
Disney Channel in the UK will premiere the show on September 22, with BBC One following later in the year, most likely in an early evening slot as part of the channel's Christmas lineup.
