Jonathan Ross has admitted that he thought his 'Special Recognition Award' win at this week's NTAs was a fix.

The 51-year-old - who launched The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV in September - revealed that he tried to reject the trophy, believing that it had been given as a result of his defection from the BBC.

"I did query that. I said, 'Is this just because I'm on ITV? Please, if it's for that then I don't want it'," he told The Sun. "But they said, 'No, people from Channel 4 and the BBC also said you should have it'.

"I'm uncomfortable with praise. I don't know how to respond to it. It's really lovely but I've had to learn how to accept it. I'm embarrassed by it.

"I feel I'm so lucky to be doing this job, you don't need to give me an award."

Ross went on to admit that his nerves may have initially affected the quality of his new programme.

"The first series on ITV I was trying to second-guess the audience and I think people noticed that I didn't look as comfortable," he said.

Referencing the infamous 'Sachsgate' scandal in 2008, Ross added: "I felt nervous. I was worried the audience might not want to watch any more or that we might say something that would trigger another frenzy."

Ross yesterday (January 27) announced that he will be hosting a new ITV panel quiz called Trending Topics.
