Lygo wants more 'breakout' shows at C5

Kevin Lygo, Channel 5's director of programmes, has said that the station needs 'mould-breaking' shows to draw ratings.

"It's a justified criticism of Channel 5 that it hasn't had a breakout show yet," he said. "That's the holy grail. Only football and movies get more than 4-5m viewers at the moment."

Touting C4's Trigger Happy TV and Da Ali G Show as examples, he went on to explain that the only way to get breakout shows is to comission programmes with a different formula.

"My experience at Channel 4 and E4 is that there are many more rewards if you genuinely try to do something different from other people," he added.

"The audience want something new from Channel 5, not copycat shows at a quarter of the price. If we can get one or two entertainment shows right, such as Trigger Happy TV or Ali G, that reverberates through the channel.

"I'm a believer that if you build it, they will come. In the end you can't commission by demographics. You have to go on good programmes."
