The crime drama - entitled Forbrydelsen in Denmark - will return to Danish channel DR in September.
Penned by creator Soren Sveistrup, the new run will see Sarah Lund (Sofie Gråbøl) take on her final case as she investigates the apparently random killing of a sailor.
As her investigation continues, Lund will confront the country's prime minister and delve into parts of society badly hit by the financial crisis.
"We're trying to describe a Denmark on the way down, which was not the premise of the first two seasons," said production designer Jette Lehmann. "It has become darker and heavier."
Forbrydelsen III will also see Morten Suurballe reprise his role as Lund's boss Lennart Brix. No date has yet been set for the show's UK transmission on BBC Four.
The first series of Forbrydelsen was adapted for US audiences by AMC last year. The US series will return for a second run on April 1.
