The show follows the life of Denmark's first female Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen) as she faces challenges in the political arena and at home.
Borgen also examines the life of Birgitte's spin doctor Kasper (Pilou Asbæk) and television journalist Katrine (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen) among others.
The first series came to a close on BBC Four at the weekend and an American remake is thought to be in the works.
BBC Four's controller Richard Klein has now confirmed that the second series of Borgen will air on the channel, adding that he is "delighted" to be broadcasting the show.
The BBC's head of programme acquisition Sue Deeks added: "Borgen's combination of politics, journalism and human drama (not to mention stylish interior design!) has proved a winner with viewers and critics alike and we are delighted to confirm that Birgitte Nyborg will be returning for another term on BBC Four."
The success of Borgen follows similar Scandinavian hits on the channel, such as Wallander and The Killing.
BBC Four also recently picked up Norwegian drama Lilyhammer, which stars The Sopranos' Steven Van Zandt.
