Eurosport has this morning confirmed to Digital Spy that its long-awaited news channel, Eurosportnews, is launching in the UK on the Sky Digital and Telewest Active Digital platforms.
The service will be available on Sky Digital from Monday September 3rd at 10am. Telewest Active Digital subscribers will begin receiving the channel from October 1st. No date has been scheduled for a launch on ntl; somewhat surprising considering British Eurosport is invested in by the ntl subsidiary, Premium TV through a contractural joint venture.
Arjan Hoekstra, Deputy Managing Director of British Eurosport told Digital Spy:
"The arrival of Eurosportnews completes our multi-media platform in the UK with our flagship channel British Eurosport and popular web-site eurosport.co.uk, reinforcing our position as a major player in the British media sports market."
In a possible hint at forthcoming ntl carriage, Arjan said "...we will be looking to extend Eurosportnews's distribution in the UK as soon as possible."
Sky's Director of Operations & Channel Development, Lesley MacKenzie, commented:
"BskyB is pleased to welcome Eurosportnews to the exciting range of sports channels available to Sky digital viewers. As Sky digital's seventh dedicated sports channel, Eurosportnews will complement the live action, news and results provided by the existing line-up of services."
Andrew Shaw, Telewest's director on content acquisition and business development, hailed the company's "great sports line-up", adding:
"Telewest Active Digital customers enjoy the best choice in broadband entertainment and communications. We have a great sports line-up and the addition of Eurosportnews strengthens our position - offering top entertainment at superior value."
