Mrs Biggs is a new-five part drama from writer and producer Jeff Pope (Appropriate Adult, See No Evil: The Moors Murders), which follows the story of Charmian falling in love with the infamous Ronnie.
Danny Mays (Ashes to Ashes, Public Enemies) will star as Biggs, while Adrian Scarborough (Upstairs Downstairs) and Caroline Goodall (The Good Wife) will play Charmian's parents.
Mrs Biggs recounts the relationship between Charmian and Ronnie, which she maintained despite fierce opposition from her family about dating a man with a criminal record.
The story follows Charmian after she secretly emigrates to Australia with her children on false passports so that she can remain with her husband and help him avoid capture for more than four years.
After Ronnie skips the country and her eldest son Nicky dies in a car accident, Charmian attempts to forge a life for herself and her other two sons and studies for a degree.
When Ronnie is discovered by Scotland Yard living in Rio, she flies out for an emotional reunion with her husband. However, the on-the-run criminal informs Charmian that he wants a divorce so that he can bring up a child with a local night club dancer, Raimunda Nascimento De Castro.
A heartbroken Charmian agrees to grant the divorce so that Ronnie would have a better chance of avoiding extradition back to the UK.
"When I received the call to say that I'd got this job I burst into tears," said Smith.
"Charmian is an incredible woman, and I'm so lucky that she'll be on hand to support me and give me advice during the shoot. I hope that I can do her story justice."
Pope, who has been working on the project for four years, commented: "Charmian's is one of the great untold stories of the 20th Century, set against the backdrop of one of the greatest crimes of all times. But at the heart of it is a simple love story between Charmian and Ron."
Charmian, who acted as a consultant for the actors in the show, added: "If my story were to be dramatised I wanted it to be done as accurately as possible. It seemed to me this was an opportunity to convey the rollercoaster of emotions involved, rather than just the bare facts."
Mrs Biggs is being filmed on location in London, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Melbourne.
