While promoting his BBC Three documentary Stop My Stutter, the former Pop Idol contestant spoke about his use of the Maguire technique, which helped him overcome his speech issues.

This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby was brought to tears upon hearing of the story in the documentary about Simon Robinson, who explained that he wanted to fix his speech impediment in time for his wedding.

Gates added that having a stammer has prevented him from having a normal social life at times, saying: "You're not able to be that funny, witty person in a social environment.

"When your speech is not that great, in a restaurant or bar, we'd rather order a drink that we can say rather than one we want."

Stop My Stutter will next be broadcast on BBC Three on Tuesday February 28 at 12.45am.
