Australia celebrates 50 years of TV

Australia celebrated 50 years of television this week with star-studded events in Sydney.

On September 16, 1956, Frank Packer's TCN-9 became the first TV station in the country to begin regular transmissions. TCN-9 went on to become the Nine Network's flagship station.

It was with more than a tinge of irony, therefore, that Seven Network held the biggest event marking the occasion, hosting a black tie gala at the city's Star City Showroom that was broadcast live on the network. Seven's first station, HSV-7 in Melbourne, started regular transmissions on November 4, 1956 and continues to produce ratings hits for the network including Dancing With The Stars.

Seven's broadcast also revealed the most memorable moments on Australian TV as selected by viewers, a list topped by major news events including Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon and the September 11, 2001 attacks on America.

The top ten list:

1. Man Walks On The Moon
2. 9/11 Attacks
3. Assassination of President John F. Kennedy
4. Death of Princess Diana
5. Death of Elvis
6. The Wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and HRH Prince Charles
7. Cyclone Tracy hitting Darwin on Christmas Eve, 1974
8. First regular colour broadcast, 1975
9. "A dingo took my baby" - Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton
10. The Port Arthur Massacre
