'The Saturday Show' aims high
Published Wednesday, Sep 12 2001, 20:55 BST | By Neil Wilkes
The hosts of BBC1's forthcoming The Saturday Show have promised that it will be a "bigger, better, and sexier" show than ITV1 rival SMTV:Live.
"We think our show is bigger and better and sassier and sexier and more stylish," said main female host Dani Behr yesterday. "I think I have been chosen, exactly because I am not a kids' TV presenter and people know that through my live TV experience.
"I have never done children's TV, mostly because I do not like being a patronising and cheesy presenter, it is not my thing. If I do this show I can talk to them like I talk to adults and the contents of the show can be for everyone."
The first programme will air on September 22nd, for three hours starting 9am. It will replace Live and Kicking, which was axed earlier this year, after consistent ratings defeats from SM:TV. Behr, however, denies that the BBC will be copying ITV's successful format.
"I do not think we are heading in the same direction as Ant and Dec, it is just that they have opened the door to a whole new demographic for this time slot," she said. "It used to be mostly just for kids but they have made it an older, wider audience. So we have to cater for both kids and the 30 and 40-year-olds who are in bed watching."
Male presenter Joe Mace added: "I am a big fan of Ant and Dec... We thank them for upping the ante because they really did. We thank them for opening the door to a bigger audience and an older audience and I guess that is why this show looks the way it does."
