UK pickup? Five

Plot in a nutshell: Nine people are brought together after enduring a traumatic 52-hour bank robbery together.

What's it all about? A seemingly ordinary day at the bank turms scary after two brothers stage a robbery. 52 hours later the police finally bring the hostage to an end, leaving more than one person dead. The nine survivors (hence The Nine - you see?) are left traumatised by the experience, finding themselves increasingly dependent on each other for emotional support.

Does it work? It's a certainly a nice concept, with an initial setup more creative than the other new contender this season (JJ Abrams' Six Degrees). It is clouded in intrigue but has the potential to become more tedious than compelling - for example, we don't actually witness the events of the hostage but instead skip straight to the end, then begins a process of dripfeeding clues from the 52 hours. Aren't we tired of this sort of format by now?

Chances of success: It's a tricky one. The market is crowded with serialised dramas all trying to be the next Lost or Prison Break at the moment, and it takes something pretty special to command a large audience week-on-week. Nothing about The Nine indicates that it will stand up to that level - although there is a final minute twist that has potential. All in all, we could be looking at a mediocre performer at best.
