'Frost' story writer threatens to quit

Rodney Wingfield, who writes the stories for television's Inspector Frost, has apparently threatened to end the character after a bad experience with the police.

The author put the decision down to a run-in with Essex constabulary, which saw his nephew wrongly arrested for shoplifting.

Although currently putting the finishing touches to his sixth Frost book, he said in a letter to his agent: "My current pro-police Frost book will be my last."

Wingfield has reportedly made an official compaint over his nephew's treatment and a force spokesman confirmed the issue.

"We will be contacting Mr Wingfield in order to discuss his concerns," he said. "It would be a great shame if Mr Wingfield killed off his character Jack Frost because of this. I know the character is very popular with members of the public and indeed our own staff."

Jacqui Lyons, the writer's agent, said she did not know what Wingfield would actually do with Frost. She said: "I'm not reading into this that he's killing the character off.

"We don't know what will happen with the Frost character, and what Rodney does with him is his business. But it could be that he leaves and does something else."
