Des O'Connor is set to be the new host of Countdown, replacing Des Lynam.
The Sun reports that the 74-year-old entertainer will screen test for the presenting role next week, having overtaken a number of high profile contenders such as Stephen Fry and Eamonn Holmes.
An insider told the paper: "We looked long and hard for someone who could match Des Lynam’s cool delivery and swarthy charm and Des O’Connor was the clear choice."
Lynam will finish recording the popular Channel 4 show this Christmas because he feels an excessive amount of travelling is involved between his home and the recording studios.
