Des Lynam recently quit the show after just a year at the post and producers are desperately trying to find a replacement.
The Have I Got News For You regular said that he had no interest in the job because it is not a comic role.
According to TV Scoop, Merton noted: "If you record five shows a day, you run out of funny stuff."
The programme was left without a host following Richard Whiteley's death in June 2005. Programme bosses are currently considering the likes of Des O'Connor and Alan Titchmarsh for the job.
