Dynamo, David Blaine, Sooty: Top 10 greatest TV magicians - Videos

By
Dynamo returns to the streets tonight in a second series of his super-cool magic series Magician Impossible, single-handedly making magicians hip again.

Gone are the days of top hats with rabbits in them and old men in dusty suits. The Bradford trickster has made card tricks and whizzing sleight-of-hand action into the new rock and roll.

To celebrate Dynamo's return, Digital Spy has picked out its top ten favourite TV Magicians of all-time.

Penn & Teller
These super-cool American dudes have been performing together since the 1970s and their big noisy talking guy and shy mute guy shtick still hasn't got old. Kings of Vegas and with dozens of TV shows under their belt, they prove that magic can be mass entertainment without too much pomp or smugness. Watch their classic 'Bullet' trick below for a snippet of them at their best:

Sooty
He may be a bear of not many words, but Sooty knows his way around a party trick and his 'Izzy Wizzy' magic wand work is the envy of much of the Magic Circle. Watch the yellow bear and Matthew Corbett displaying some of their finest trickery below:

Paul Daniels
He may be considered a bit old hat and corny these days, but no magician before or since has managed to bring the art of magic to Saturday night primetime in quite the same way. His BBC series, which ran from 1979 to 1994, was clean family fun and occasionally breathtaking. His cup/ball routine remains an absolute belting classic.

David Blaine
He may be considered more of an oddball than an magician these days, but there was a time when David Blaine was considered groundbreaking and even, whisper it, cool. Before hanging out with Michael Jackson, freaking out Eamonn Holmes on GMTV and locking himself in a box above the Thames, Blaine was freaking out punters with awesome card tricks, street magic and best of all - levitation!

Neil Patrick Harris
You may know him from How I Met Your Mother or Doogie Howser, but Neil Patrick Harris isn't just a great actor, presenter, singer and comic. He's also a dab hand at magic. Blending his humour with a passion for tricks, the TV star brings a unique style to the world of conjuring.

David Copperfield
The old joke used to be that David Copperfield's greatest trick was landing supermodel Claudia Schiffer as his girlfriend. But that's unfair on the super-smooth US magician. He may have been a bit on the smarmy side, but he dominated the world of TV magic for years, entertaining millions and pocketing a healthy amount of wonga for himself in the process. He specialised in mega show-pieces such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear.

Tommy Cooper
Don't be fooled by the fez and the giant smile, Tommy Cooper was a fully-fledged member of the Magic Circle. It was the fact that Cooper understood magic, its appeal and how the tricks were supposed to work that made his mockery of the artform and his bumbling mistakes so effortlessly pitch-perfect. Without a doubt, the funniest magician there ever has been and probably ever will be. Watch his classic 'Magic Cloak' act below:

Derren Brown
He strongly denies that he's a magician, but that's pretty much hogwash. Brown may come from a more intellectual school of thought when it comes to trickery, but he's got all the same traits, patter and showmanship of the truly great magic men. Whether he's predicting lottery results or managing to hypnotise people into killing Stephen Fry, he's super cool and mind-blowingly clever.

The Great Soprendo
A possible rival for Sooty as the greatest children's magician of all time, Geoffrey Durham's alter ego was one funny cookie. His paper-ripping trick was a classic that every dad in the country tried to replicate for children's parties across the land. Strangely enough, they usually just ended up with shredded newspaper on the floor.

Dynamo
The new king of TV magic, Yorkshire lad Dynamo has used the inspiration and teachings of his late grandfather to bring brain-hurting street magic to the UK. Best mates with celebs, huge on Twitter and able to walk across the Thames, Dynamo is not only the coolest magician on TV, he's one of the coolest guys on TV full stop.

Dynamo: Magician Impossible series two premieres tonight (July 5) at 9pm on Watch.
