BBC doc to make Brits tribal wives
Published Friday, Nov 10 2006, 10:46 GMT | By Dave West
A BBC documentary is to make six British women the second wives of tribesmen across the world.
They will spend a month in communities in Greenland, Papua New Guinea, Africa and Northern Mongolia following the lives of men's real wives.
Woman Of The Tribe challenges them to shadow all the wives' daily patterns and "immerse themselves fully into their new culture".
The BBC Two series, producers hope, will expose the communities' perceptions of the west as well as pose a challenge for the Britons.
People from the tribes will be interviewed regularly and asked "how useful" the wives are proving.
BBC Vision director Jana Bennett commented: "The beauty of this series is that it is a modern format that plays to the traditional strengths of BBC documentaries, with the aim of bringing a challenging and unfamiliar world to a wider audience."
Richard Klein, BBC commissioning editor of documentaries, added: "Woman of the Tribe will give UK audiences and the six western women a real insight into how tribal women really live, the everyday issues they deal with, their hopes and fears, and their views on life.
"Viewers will see the women of the tribe speak with passion, emotion and humour about their lives, in a way that has not been explored before."
