Tennant is best ever Who, says poll
David Tennant has been named the best ever Doctor Who actor in a poll of fans.

The star - who has only played the role since last Christmas - was chosen by 28 per cent of 4,000 Doctor Who Magazine readers who voted.

Classic Doctor Tom Baker, who held the role from 1974 to 1981, was pushed into second place in the close-run contest, with 27 per cent.

Tennant commented: "This is a real honour, and I am totally gobsmacked."

Clayton Hickman, magazine editor, praised Tennant's achievement. "This is an incredible result for David, and shows how quickly viewers have taken to him," he explained. "The iconic image of Doctor Who has always been of Tom Baker in his floppy hat and long, multi-coloured scarf, but it looks like that's been replaced."

Billie Piper was also chosen as readers' favourite Who assistant, with 1970s star Elisabeth Sladen second.

The top five Doctors:

1. David Tennant - 28.2%
2. Tom Baker - 26.5%
3. Christopher Eccleston - 11.4%
4. Jon Pertwee - 9.6%
5. Patrick Troughton - 8.8%
