Strictly Come Dancing contestant Denise Van Outen has downplayed her dancing skills.

The theatre and television star has discussed fulfilling her ambition to appear on the show.

"Well I can move. I can do the basics... thanks to theatre school," Van Outen said. "But this is all really new to me, and I haven't danced properly for about 15 years.

"When I say 'properly', I mean 'in a stage show when I've had to dance'. I'd give myself four our of ten.

"I'm most nervous about the fact that people will think I can dance already because of my stage career."

Van Outen also claimed that her role as Roxie Hart in Chicago did not really involve dancing.

"She is sitting on a chair most of the time," she said.

Van Outen said that this was the first year in a while that she is not in a show and so can compete in Strictly Come Dancing.

She will appear alongside Colin Salmon, Dani Harmer, Jerry Hall, Fern Britton, Victoria Pendleton, Johnny Ball, Lisa Riley, Louis Smith, Michael Vaughan, Nicky Byrne, Richard Arnold, Sid Owen and Kimberley Walsh.

Strictly Come Dancing's tenth series will premiere this Saturday (September 15) at 6.30pm on BBC One.
