'Red Dwarf X' looks spectacular, says star Craig Charles

By
Craig Charles has described the new series of Red Dwarf as "spectacular".

The six-part Red Dwarf X - which reunites the sci-fi sitcom's original cast for the first time since 2009 - will air on Dave from Thursday, October 4.

"I'm really pleased with it," Charles told TV Choice. "The writing is right up there with some of the best ever written for the series. It's exceeded my expectations. And of course with technology moving on so much, it makes it look spectacular."

The 48-year-old - who plays Dave Lister - also poked fun at his "ancient" co-stars Robert Llewellyn, Danny John-Jules and Chris Barrie.

"I'm the only one who's got a bit of youth left," he joked. "Kryten is crammed full of software these days and if Cat wasn't wearing a wig he'd just be a balding old man, believe me, and Chris Barrie [who plays Rimmer] can't remember a line!

"My shoulders are killing me from carrying the three of them for the whole series. My character, Dave Lister, might be middle-aged these days but his haircut is still that of a 21-year-old!"

Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor recently confirmed that the BBC - who originally aired the comedy between 1988 and 1999 - was not interested in producing the new revival.
