Rice speaks about new 'Challenge Anneka'

Anneka Rice has spoken about the decision to bring back Challenge Anneka for a one-off episode.

The TV host, who disappeared from the spotlight to become a full-time mother the mid-90s, agreed to a Christmas special during a chance meeting with an old colleague. The episode will see Rice helping victims of the Asian tsunami which struck on Boxing Day 2004.

"I think when my old colleague first saw me, she thought, 'Oh my God, Anneka is alive. How extraordinary.' We started talking. The more we talked, the more I thought I'd love to dust off the old format, even for just one more project," Anneka told the Sunday Mirror. "The first thing I did was go home and talk to my three sons - Sam, nine, Josh, 16, and Thomas, 17.

"They were hugely supportive. Sam is too young to know me as a TV presenter. He just said, 'Mum, of course you must do it.' But the idea had to be right. I told ITV we would come back if we could do a project to help those affected by the tsunami.

"As a family we had friends who had died. My children lost a friend and I lost a friend. And two years on, many regions are still devastated.''
