BBC to launch set-top box?
Published Saturday, Oct 27 2001, 09:53 BST | By Neil Wilkes
The BBC is in discussions with technology companies about developing its own set-top box, according to a report in this week's Broadcast.
The next generation boxes would combine an internet browser with a DTT receiver to provide access to FTA stations.
UK firm Access Davies has approached BBC Ventures CEO Julian Turner about the idea, which could see the boxes made available as early as next Summer.
The receivers would be passed off at low cost to the consumer. Sources quote an initial figure of £100, which could drop to £50 by 2005.
The move would fit in with the government's action plan to drive the takeup of digital TV.
