Hammond crash aired on 'Top Gear'
Footage of the car crash that nearly killed Richard Hammond has been aired for the first time on BBC Two's Top Gear.

According to the BBC, Hammond, 37, received a "heroes welcome" upon his return to the programme on Sunday.

He was seriously injured when his jet-powered car, travelling at 280 m.p.h., came off the runway during a record attempt near York.

Hammond suffered brain injuries during the crash at Elvington airfeild after a tyre burst on the Vampire jet car, causing it to skid and flip over.

On the show, he told how experts who analysed the footage of the crash had said that he had displayed the reactions of a fighter pilot.

When asked why he had attempted a final run in the car after having already reached speeds of 314 m.p.h., he replied: "I suppose it's like when you're playing outside as a kid and then your mum called you in for dinner. You'd always stay out for a bit longer..."

"...And that's when you'd fall out of the tree", remarked Clarkson.

To which Hammond replied, "As it happens, yes."
