2012 has been a bumper year for TV ratings with the London Olympics, Euro 2012 and Queen's Jubilee celebrations pulling in some of the biggest TV audiences in many years.

Squeezed in among the Team GB gold rush, flag waving for Queenie and yet another English penalty shoot out disaster, there has also been the usual mix of brilliant dramas and monster entertainment format hits.

Simon Cowell's X Factor and BGT remain two of the biggest shows in Britain, but have faced fresh competition this year from a rejuvenated Strictly Come Dancing and new kid on the block The Voice UK.

Dancing on Ice and I'm a Celebrity may have been going for many a year, but they still pull in big viewer numbers for ITV1.

Meanwhile, Sherlock and Doctor Who have proved that high quality, big budget dramas can still make must-see appointment TV when done properly.

The Downton Abbey bandwagon proved that the nation's love affair with period dramas is showing no sign of easing off, but it faces fresh competition on the biggest TV drama front from BBC One's surprise smash Call The Midwife

With only the Christmas season of shows to come, will any comedies break into the most-watched list? Festive specials for Mrs Brown's Boys and The Royle Family could potentially change all that.
