George Alagiah to front BBC Four News

George Alagiah will front BBC Four's weekday news programme, the Corporation announced today.

BBC Four News will be broadcast daily from Monday to Friday at 8pm, reflecting on the big global stories of the day over half an hour. It will be the UK’s first nightly bulletin devoted principally to foreign news.

“One thing that September 11th taught all of us is the notion that we, in the rich world, can live in splendid isolation from the teeming billions in the poor world is simply no longer tenable,??? Alagiah said today. “The policies our governments pursue have effects way beyond our borders. That is the way the real world works and BBC Four News will make those connections."

Roly Keating, Controller for Digital Channels at the BBC, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that someone as well-known and respected as George Alagiah will be presenting BBC Four News. He has the perfect background for a programme with a uniquely international agenda.???

BBC Four is to launch in March 2002, transmitting from 7pm daily. BBC Four News will be produced by BBC World, and will be simulcast to 180 million homes in 200 countries and territories world-wide.
