Wogan bungles Eurovision announcement

Terry Wogan announced the wrong winner of Making Your Mind Up - the show selecting the UK's Eurovision entry - on live television.

Scooch won the competition to travel to Helsinki in May in a final tie-breaker round on the BBC show.

However, presenter Wogan mistakenly named their rival, solo singer Cyndi Almouzni, as the winner. Co-host Fearne Cotton rapidly interrupted him and set the record straight, to Almouzni's disappointment.

One viewer, Alisdair Mackay, from Leamington Spa, told the Sunday Mirror about the slip. "I am a big fan of Eurovision but this was a real cock-up," he recalled. "First there were no numbers on the screen later on for viewers to vote, and then they announced entirely the wrong winner.

"It made me think the whole thing must be fixed. I can't believe they can't get it right. I mean, how long has Terry Wogan being doing this show anyway?"

A BBC spokeswoman said: "It was a mistake. We would like to sincerely apologise to viewers but it is live TV and sometimes these things happen."
