New ITV drama The Town dominated the slot with a respectable 4.2 million (18.5%), adding 281k for the critically-acclaimed premiere starring Sherlock's Andrew Scott.
BBC One's factual offering War on Britain's Roads managed 3.47m (15.1%), while Grand Designs interested 1.36m (5.9%) on Channel 4 (+1: 183k), and Chris Tarrant's new Channel 5 series Extreme Railways opened with 1.18m (5.2%) as well as 108k on timeshift.
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! made a final bow in the 8pm hour with its usual Coming Out show, which logged 6.13m (26.3%) and 404k on ITV1 +1.
Behind I'm a Celeb at the same time was BBC One's Supersized Earth (3.46m/14.6%), BBC Two's MasterChef: The Professionals (2.83m/12%), Channel 5's Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle (1.12m/4.7%) and Sarah Beeny's Selling Houses (1.02m/4.3%) on Channel 4 (+1: 181k).
Overall, ITV1 topped primetime with 23.7% (+1: 1.1%), beating BBC One's 16.9%. BBC Two earned third place with 6.4%, ahead of Channel 4's 4.1% (+1: 0.8%), and Channel 5's 4% (+1: 0.3%).
