NTAs: Sherlock, Downton, Doctor Who - What should win best 'Drama'?

By
The National Television Awards 2012 with host Dermot O'Leary

The National TV Awards are coming! The only TV awards voted for solely by TV fans is back next Wednesday (January 23) with Dermot O'Leary on hosting duties at The O2.

We asked you yesterday what you thought should win the best 'Talent Show' gong (Strictly appears to be winning the debate) and today it's the turn of serious drama. *chin stroke*.

It's four heavyweights going head-to-head for the accolade this year - a mixture of crime, sci-fi, period and fantasy - so who do you think should win? Here are the contenders:

Downton Abbey

Last year's champ is back for a second win in successive years. But after that ropy Christmas special (Oh Matthew!) and the peculiar ending to series three (A cricket match?! Really?!), will Downton still have the wow factor when it comes to viewers' votes? It's still the biggest drama on TV when it comes to ratings, but it might not be the most deserving triumph if it did take home the gong this year.

There used to be a time when this category could have been renamed the Doctor Who Award. It walked it every year. But after being nudged out by Waterloo Road(!) and Downton for the last two years, it can't take anything for granted anymore. It had a strong series in 2012 and the Christmas special was one of its best for a while, but its main problem comes from a vote split with its rival cult shows in the category.

Merlin

Merlin - always the bridesmaid, never the bride. The BBC fantasy series is usually overlooked at the big awards shows for its bigger brother siblings Doctor Who and Sherlock. But maybe, just maybe, all fingers and legs crossed, this will be the year that the show gets its reward. It bowed out with style at Christmas and it's a case of now or never for Merlin-lovers to pull their finger out and vote.

If these awards were taking place last January, Sherlock would surely have walked with ease to the crown. However, more than 12 months on from the awesome series two, the NTAs may have come at the wrong time for Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The fantastic 'Reichenbach Fall' finale episode would by itself be worthy of the title, but with the long break off air, will the Sherlockology hardcore remember to vote in force?

What should win?
