The National Television Awards are just one day away. Dermot O'Leary will be handing out the gongs to the nation's favourite shows and stars at the O2 tomorrow evening and Digital Spy wants to know who our readers are backing.

We've had polls for 'Best Drama', 'Best Talent Show', 'Best Actress' and today it's time for perhaps the most hotly contested award of 2013 - 'Best Actor'.

The stars of Mrs Biggs, Sherlock, Merlin and Doctor Who are in the four-way battle for the gong. But who should take home the spoils?

The bookies' favourite and Hollywood star seems like the most obvious pick for the gong. The unlikely sex symbol and the man who made Sherlock Holmes cool again has plenty working in his favour. But in a head-to-head clash with Steven Moffat's other baby (Doctor Who), will the Sherlockology fanatics be strong enough to defeat the Whovians? We'll find out on Wednesday night.

Daniel Mays (Mrs Biggs)
Mrs Biggs, Episode 2, Wed 12 Sep

Like Sheridan Smith in the 'Best Actress' category, Mays is the definite outsider. His single series drama doesn't have the same legion of loyal fans as his rivals so he's up against it from the start. However, if the cult fans are dividing between the other three, perhaps the Mrs Biggs star could sneak up from the outside. Stranger things have happened at the NTAs.

In a normal year, Colin Morgan would have to settle for a nomination and watch Cumberbatch and Smith bash heads for the crown. But with Merlin bowing out in 2012 in emotional fashion (and having one of its strongest series ever to boot), this is his best chance yet of snagging the main prize. Our heart votes for him, but our head suggests he may miss out once more.

Matt Smith (Doctor Who)

The 2012 winner is hoping for back-to-back NTA wins at the O2 and you'd be a fool to bet against him. The Doctor lost the Ponds and found a new companion over the last 12 months, winning over all but the most stubborn David Tennant fanatics with his performances. Will Doctor Who triumph in the year of its 50th anniversary? If we were betting people, we'd stick a fiver on the floppy-haired Time Lord.
