Three Coronation Street characters are being axed as part of a bid to combat EastEnders in the ratings war.
Stephen Beckett and Clare McGlinn, who play the parts of husband and wife Matt and Charlie Ramsden in the soap, will leave the show at the end of March, after news of Matt's affair with Maxine gets out.
Maxine's husband Ashley, played by Stephen Peacock, is "devastated" by the secret; discovering that Maxine's baby may not be his. Further difficulties mean Maxine could lose the child.
Beckett said: "I have had a fantastic year and a half in Coronation Street. The cast and the crew are a fabulous bunch of people to work with and it's great we are being given such a fantastic exit storyline."
McGlinn added: "We came in on a high and we are leaving on a high."
A third character, Bobbi Lewis, played by Naomi Russell, is also to depart from the cast in the Spring. Lewis will leave after hatching a plan to get revenge on boyfriend Vikram Desai, who cheats on her with Hazel Wilding.
The new storylines also feature Gail Platt (Helen Worth) accepting conman Richard Hillman's wedding proposal.
